Description
A parchment from 1453 confirms the existence of viticulture and that the name "Trotte Vieille" was already used for this estate in the 15th century.
The name is derived from the fact that a lady lived in this charterhouse in the 14th century. This little lady was very interested in what was happening in the city of Bordeaux and used to go to the nearby crossroads where the stagecoaches from Bordeaux stopped. As the lady often seemed to hurry the coaches, the people of Saint-Emilion called her "la trotte vieille".
This unusual name was already used for the château in the 15th century. In honour of the lady who gave her name, the second wine of Trotte Vieille is called "La Vieille Dame de Trotte Vieille". Trotte Vieille is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Emilion and has some of the oldest vines in Bordeaux, some of which predate phylloxera and are therefore over 140 years old.
