Description
Roc de Cambes is a 12-hectare property in the Côtes-de-Bourg that also belongs to one of Bordeaux's most charming owners, François Mitjavile, who also owns Tertre Roteboeuf in Saint-Émilion. The property came into the family fold in 1988.
Its terroir shares similarities with Tertre Roteboeuf, notably the clay-limestone soils. However, the grape varieties are in contrast to local practices and are similar to those of the Médoc, with Cabernet Sauvignon dominating (75%), followed by Merlot (20%) and Cabernet Franc (5%). Most of the vines are around 50 years old, an impressive age for the region.
At the time of its acquisition, the estate needed major work in the vineyard and cellar. Thanks to François' hard work, Roc de Cambes has become arguably the best Côtes-de-Bourg estate, vinified in concrete tanks and aged in French oak barrels. Although only 50% of the barrels are new, the wine often has a smoky, savoury character, reminiscent of Tertre Roteboeuf. A second reference, Domaine de Cambes, comes out of the cellars but is not so much a second wine as another cuvée regularly made from different parcels.
