Description
Owned in the 18th century, along with Lafite and Latour, by the "prince of vines", the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, and later by the Barons of Brane, who called it Brane-Mouton, Château Mouton Rothschild took its present name after its acquisition in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, from the English branch of the famous dynasty.
For a long time, despite the increasingly recognised quality of its wine, Mouton did not attract much interest from its owners, who were reluctant to travel to a region that was then deprived. So it was a good day when in 1922, at the age of just twenty, Baron Philippe de Rothschild, great-grandson of Baron Nathaniel, took over the destiny of an estate to which he would devote his life.
