Description
With origins dating back to 1638, Léoville was the largest vineyard in the Médoc region at the time of the French Revolution.
Léoville Poyferré springs from various divisions and successions in 1840. Its outstanding quality wines gained early recognition when it was ranked 2nd Growth in the 1855 classification. Château Léoville Poyferré was acquired in 1920 by the Cuvelier family.
The various divisions throughout the history of the estate have split the vineyard of Léoville Poyferré into five large areas. They include all the main types of gravelly soil present in Saint Julien. This diversity contributes to the amplitude and complexity of the Léoville Poyferré wines.
Tasting
To the eye : The colour of the 2015 vintage is a deep garnet with purple hues. The wine is limpid and brilliant.
Nose : This Saint-Julien is very open with red and black fruit aromas. After a little airing, the wine reveals itself more and allows us to detect its aromas a little more. The crème de cassis is fully expressed, accompanied by deeper notes of toast.
Mouth : the attack is frank. The wine is powerful, fleshy and generous. The tannic structure is marked and then gives way to a singular freshness which brings a lot of elegance, typical of the great Saint-Julien wines. The retro-olfaction confirms this aromatic of very ripe black fruits. On the finish, we appreciate a vanilla note reminiscent of the ageing process and bringing a beautiful complexity to the whole. The aromatic persistence and the freshness that we find there, classify it among the great vintages of the domain.
