The history of Pontac merges with that of Bordeaux wines. It was indeed in 1533 that Jean de Pontac founded the Haut-Brion estate for the exploitation of vines. He lived 101 years, having passed through the reigns of Louis XII, Francis I, Henry II, Charles IX and Henry III.
A century later, his descendant Arnaud de Pontac, invents the notion of "vintage" associated with a well-defined terroir. In addition to being an adroit wine grower, he is a political end since he is named in 1660 the first President of the Parliament of Bordeaux. A wise businessman, he decided to highlight his high-quality wines and export them to England where the "Ho Bryan" was tasted at the "Pontac's Head" tavern in London. members of this family have exploited several properties in Bordeaux, Sauternes or Graves.
In 1937, the Count Max de Pontac, eager to continue deep family attachment to the lands of Bordeaux and its wines, bought the castle of MYRAT. It exploits during forty years this magnificent classified growth of Sauternes located on the limestone plateau known as "Haut-Barsac", and makes many facilities there. The vines of the castle of Myrat are cultivated on a ground composed of 30cm of clay that covers a bench of limestone on a cracked limestone base providing natural drainage. Poor soil for any other crop, only the vine was able to find there the ideal conditions to produce a grape of quality, going to draw in depth l water and the nutrients it needs.
The typical limestone plateau of Barsac brings to the wines located on this town, including the Château de Myrt, a freshness and a particular minerality. This is why these wines can choose the Sauternes appellation as well as the Barsac appellation.
